I recently noticed this Bishop Lamont verse that had been hiding towards the end of the (really good) Do the Right Thing themed Kardinal mixtape Clinton Sparks put out last summer. In other news, this weekend was truly one for shows in the greater Olympia area.
On friday night Andy and my noise combo, DMX II, was on some room clearing shit at a benefit for the Olympia Anarchist book fair (which I believe is going down this weekend at the Eagles Hall downtown). Our crew held it down but pretty much everyone else there was not into it whatsoever. It was cool though, these things happen and everyone kept it respectful.

Saturday morning brought temps in the 80's, short shorts and beach parties. Needless to say it was super metal and got us all in the mood for Thrones and Wolves in the damn Throne Room once the sun went down. The show was held at the hall of the woods, a converted eagles hall in the middle of the forest and a personal fav spot of mine in town.

Sunday was super crazy and some of the most fun I've had in a minute. Yellow Swans and Sissy Spacek came through my basement and shared a bill with the Oly Noise Allstars, DJ Floortom, MIDWIFE! and the Dead White. You certainly wouldn't expected it from all the shreddoggs that played, but many many attendees made comments to me regarding the "chillness" of the atmosphere and the overall sweet vibes emanating from just about everyone in the room. Everyone was super respectful of the crib and there was hardly even a bunch of beer cans to clean up.

I was most proud of Olympia, Washington when a full on dance party took place while Yellow Swans and John Wiese set up their mountain of gear. John Wiese is getting all like pissed off at his Max MSP rig and fogging his glasses and shit and there are fifty drunk, stoked, sweating kids shaking their asses and crowding the shit out of him, MANY OF WHOM WERE GIRLS. I challenge any city in Amerika to get that going, real talk. Surreal talk.

I was reminded of Hammerhead thanks to Jono's diligent archiving. He recently upped both of the Kid Presentable albums (40 minutes long) as well as most of his Meat Machine jams to the music page on his blog. Down at the bottom you'll also find the entire output of Heartsmacky, the band we made when we decided to get down with some computers for the first time. Most of the jams hold up pretty well and you can guess what sick beat machine all the rhythms were composed on. Heartsmacky is rad to me because it's pretty crazy sounding, but dates back to a time when I thought I wasn't very interested in getting crazy with my music. Pulled a little sike on myself there, maybe even a super sike.

I usually try to wait at least a week after I read something off the Fader blog to post my take or whatever, but this nugget tickled me just right.

Seems like States Rights Records are putting out their first "unofficial street mixtape". It's downloadable for five bones and they are podcasting it free in two installments. It's not like I've actually heard it or anything, but content-wise it seems like maybe some hipster carpetbagger kinda shit, maybe not really too exciting. Who knows with kids these days, thats almost beside the point.

What is the point, at least in my view, and what got me going about the release is the acknowledged cross-over in aesthetics between the mixtape circuit and independently released and distributed music of other genres (genres mostly enjoyed by whitey). Both are hyper-regional, work outside of the dominant power structure present in the music biz and sound H3LLA RAW. Both distribution networks make it a point to politicize the way they conduct business and in doing so make purchasing product from them an oppositional act (albeit a small one that still upholds the oppressive system of capital that enslaves us all, mind body and soul ;) ).

I've been thinking a lot about this connection over the past two years and putting in work on my Essential Slime tapes, but I'm just one man. It's exciting to me to see more visible labels in hip towns putting out "mixtapes" (despite their suspected cornyness) and using new, internet-centric distribution models for that product. What would REALLY be exciting considering how much common ground the two scenes share, is a direct crossover from one to the other. I want a limited edition Killer Mike picture disc with hand-screened covers. I just read (again in the Fader) that my man is looking for a "white audience" to help him reach that next peak on sales mountain. Duuuuuuuuuude, I'm right here.

The Portland Skool of Rock (whom I saw tonight open for Derrick Jensen of all people. That guy is a whole nother entry and change, one that would probably land me on some nasty lists and brand this blog as a hotbed of eco-terrorism).

Anyway, Portland Skool of Rock is an organization that gives private lessons to kids on how to play "rock music" and sets up performances of the cover band nature starring the school's best a brightest. It's like Jack Black and shit. I'll preface my spiel about them by saying that on one level you have to be a complete fucking hater to let any cynical negativity enter into the picture when what you're dealing with is basically a bunch of kids enjoying and expressing themselves through music.

BUT. On another level it's not quite all good with the PSoR. If you really do the knowledge on the whole scenario it starts to seem kinda lame for a few reasons. First, it teaches impressionable young people that "rock music" (whatever that fucking is, anyway) consists of X, Y and Z and is best played on expensive electric guitars and through more expensive amplifiers and effects racks. That, of course, is a sucky thing to present to a kid. One made doubly sucky because it robs that kid of the much more illuminating experience of slowly and painfully arriving at the realization that their janky, starter pack guitars and drumsets played in a concrete basement with 7 foot ceilings aren't gonna sound like a Green Day album. True, getting that straightened out when you're thirteen doesn't afford you the opportunity to play rockstar in front of bunch of college kids and your video-ing ass parents, but it does expose to you the glaring disparity between real music and fake music right from the jump. It might even open up your eyes to the awesome transformative powers of the recording studio and land your future self in a degree program of some kind.

Second, there's a fucking old guy hella up there the whole time.
Not to just put on my union suit and become Mr. Punk Rock Old Guy at 19, but I was doing the same Dead Kennedys covers when I was those kids age but in a majorly different context (which is, of course, everything). My parents weren't sending me to rock and roll fantasy camp every week to be told what songs to play by the director of my "rock school". Instead me and bunch of other 7th graders were booking our own shows, practicing every day after school entirely of our own volition, writing our own songs and generally doing the damn thing our own selves. We were teaching ourselves the rudiments of sustaining an artistic community as apposed to nailing a sick AC/DC cover. The two are near polar opposites.

Last, and maybe most important, the kids in the Portland Skool of Rock were not playing music to or for their peers. The songs in their set alternated between regular shitty 70's classic rock, hair metal and alternative radio hits, none of which anyone on stage (besides the aforementioned old guy) was alive to witness. They were working within someone else's conception of a band and playing songs their parents or older siblings were meant to enjoy. Impressing your relatives and older cool kids is definitely a part of a growing performers life, but that's what jazz band is for.

When you play for your friends they g e t m a d i n s p i r e d. Then you get more inspired. Then you all up the punks. Then everyone starts pushing their own individual artistic imprint in a million fascinating ways and you're all glad to have put in your years with the DIY army instead of the school of shitty rock.

Industry funded paramilitary cells hellbent on damming the tidal wave of internet distribution can fuck themselves with a spiked dildo. For real, who do these guys think they are kidding anymore? Shutting down sites like Oink and TV Links is a momentary annoyance, sure, but in the long run serves only to widen the culture gap between kids and suits. If you're trying to sell a bunch of shit to Teen Q Public it's probably not a good idea to put a metaphysical hit on his preferred method of media consumption. If the music industry had half a brain they would hire me (or one of my generational counterparts) to revamp their whole operation from the bottom up.

What they need to do is start offering free content on their sites, sell ads at the top (and bottom and sides and in between new pages and popping up on your screen like all the time), use that hype to promote their artists LIVE SHOWS (plus other revenue generating side hustles) and get busy in the future. They won't even have to stop selling actual products. As revolutionary as the Internet is, it isn't gonna bust open Amerikkka's brain hard enough to break our addiction to shiny, plastic packaging. If record companies just gave up on having a monopoly on the actual content of their artists releases and starting aggressively pushing "collectors", "super special", "mad extra art and sparkle", "you can't bootleg this on the internet because its an ornate physical object" type products on the marketplace I'd be willing to bet that it'd stick. They could even charge WAY MORE for it than the price of a CD because, like, it's way BIGGER, dude. And if we wanna cut the cynicism for a second, that could actually create some new avenues for artists (who are into, you know, selling their mortal souls) to get their work out there in the world. Off the just released, limited ass edition, green vinyl and shit Ecstatic Sunshine EP, which you can snag for yrself here (along with pretty much the rest of the good, non-booty bass based music coming outta Baltimore these days).

If you do end up with the disc in your little paws don't expect anything super tight. The new tunes are some smoked out delay pedal jams clocking in around the 6 to 7 minute mark. I'm not trippin though, I know from personal experience that it's pretty revelatory when you cop that first DD-6.

Possible project for the future.

Starting on my birthday I pledge to record a minute of sound each day. Any recorded sound counts but ideally I would record as much music as possible. The idea is to document a years worth of the sounds that enter my ears. The sound can be recorded on any format in any location. No editing is allowed during the year. I am only permitted to press record, let whatever I'm using run for a minute and turn the tape off. At the end of the year I release the entire six hours on two data discs.

My main reservation is that publishing ones notebook is mad self indulgent and more importantly, I'm not sure that I could sustain that kind of daily routine for a full year. I think the discipline would be good for me though, maybe I'll try.

The new Growing album is out I guess? That kinda snuck up on me, I thought it was gonna be more of a post-420 thing, timewise. Good thing you can't throw a rock at this school without hitting a kid more on top of these things than I. This month is proving itself a slipperier eel everyday. I think I'm just gonna have to let it go and stop being so surprised every time I look at the calendar.

ANYWAY, my initial reaction to this album is pretty much the same as my reaction to their live show a few weeks back: Some really amazing shit on par with their best stuff and some cheesy ass noodling the likes of which I never thought I'd hear from Growing. Thankfully the album is heavier on the former but not nearly devoid of the latter. The real kicker though is that even the really good tracks are mad similar to Color Wheel AKA their last album. I guess Growing is nothing if a not a slow moving couple of dudes but some more growth (no pun intended) between releases would be appreciated. The shit still knocks though and will definitely be on repeat for a minute.

The Bush administration has consistently proven they are unwilling to make a good decision at any point in this whole fucked up enterprise and that's the kind of shit that'll get to you after a while. We'll be lucky if we get out of this with a civil war going in Iraq and some American boys still intact. That doesn't make me wanna smash the state, it just makes me want a hug.

The Bikes in the Kitchen clique looks way legit (despite the fact that their name is beyond silly), I'm pissed that I wasn't on the ball enough to catch Aa last night. I have tons of respect for peeps doing DIY shows and events in New York cuz it's so damn expensive and cash rules pretty much everything around. Chill house party type shit like this (and of course Todd P) circumvent the whole rock club gentrified ass wackness that is pretty much the standard in Manhattan (ABC's aside) and just keep it rilly real.

I also peeped the art at 11 Spring Street today and it was beyond crazy in a whole bunch of ways. First of all, every piece was right on point with style to spare. Pics to follow once the crew uploads um. The amount of people trying to get in also added to the crazed vibe quite a bit. Apperently The Times gave the event a chi chi write up and ain't nothing get the yuppies off their leather couches like some "underground" shit in a big ass newspaper. They were pretty tame though and looking right in some cases. But I digress, the stuff that actually matters (the art) was outstanding and no amount of yupster bullshit could touch it. Kinda ironic that the same people that were fawning over the anarchist wheat pastings are prolly gonna move into the upscale condos that are replacing the art space. New York neighborhoods are fucked like that sometimes.
